After taking the 4 block tour through Wall, we headed east toward Fort Pierre, South Dakota’s capital. A lovely morning turned to a easterly headwind. I stopped and picked up some woman hitch hiking, no, walking in the middle of nowhere. She had nothing, no water, phone, clothing, food, nothing. I can’t tell you why or what she was doing but it was a bit strange. I drove to my 15 mile leg, gave her a bottle of water and a Cliff Bar, and said goodbye as I rode away. Crossing the Missouri River felt like we had finally left the west. We arrived in Pierre, got a room at the ClubHouse Inn and Suites (very nice) and after realizing nothing was open on Sunday, ate at the hotel restaurant. Turned out to be a great decision as we got some good suggestions from the bartender who was born and raised in SD. He had an adventurous spirit and was a wealth of information.
