Today we did the backside of Beartooth pass in the direction we had just come. Diane did the 21 mile climb and I did the descent. By the time she got to the top, it was 37 degrees with a 20-25 mph headwind. The views were breathtaking. At the top of the pass, we exited Montana into Wyoming again. I put on every warm garment I had to get down. We then turned south onto the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway towards Cody, WY. Hmmm, another pass… Your turn Diane! By then, the winds had died down to about 10 mph and the pass was simply stunning. Short of the winds, this will go into our memories as the most spectacular 120 mile bike ride ever. We are very very tired.

Heading back over Beartooth Hwy from Red Lodge , MT towards Cody, WY. How is it that we have a headwind going either direction?

Diane did the whole pass while I drove up and rode back and forth

You can see how the road cuts across the hillside

Up here, there’s not just a bunch of peaks just several plateaus

So much for our brief stay in Montana

Back in Wyoming (why are we going West?)

The top of Dead Indian Pass on Hwy 296. The second jewel of the day

Some of the beautiful colors we rode though today
-
Not particularly the greatest downhill with a headwind but truly the most spectacular 120+ miles we have ever cycled through

Finally, Cody, WY. Named after Buffalo Bill Cody, who, in the late 1890′s, started the Wild West Show that he eventually took to England and Europe where people were curious about the US western movement
